The terms "safety" and "automatic" had different meanings when these revolvers were manufactured. The term "automatic" has to do with the automatic ejection of spent cartridges when the barrel is opened. "Hammerless" really meant there was a hidden hammer. The "Safety" title comes from the "Hammer the Hammer" transfer bar system which prevents the hammer from striking the frame mounted firing pin unless the trigger is correctly pulled. Dropping the pistol or letting the hammer slip would not fire the weapon.
